Terrific Tigers

Belleville grapplers have big opening night performance

What a fun evening for the Belleville Tigers and their supporters. The wrestlers were there in full numbers, obviously excited about finally wrestling someone from another team.

The coaches were shaking hands with their counterparts from Dexter and Plymouth; exchanging pleasantries and their optimism for the season. And the parents showed up in impressive numbers.

Seated in the bleachers amongst some very knowledgeable and vocal fathers, I had two recurring thoughts: It must be nice to wrestle for a team that had such fervent followers; and I am sure glad my wrestler sons told me they could not hear what was being shouted down from the stands. Granted, the Belleville kids are talented wrestlers, but there is no way they can hit four different moves simultaneously.

As for the wrestling itself, there is no better way to start the season than by going 2-0. In the first match against Plymouth, Belleville ran up against some tough lightweights, but won all but one match over 119. The final score was 49-20.

In the nightcap, things went back and forth with Dexter until Belleville rattled off three wins in a row at 135, 140 and 145 to lock it up. The final score: 36-32, with each team winning seven matches.

Going 2-0 on the night were Shames DeLaHaye (171), Forrest Sampson (215), Dustin Staton (285, both by fall), Tyler Schneider (135, both by fall), Carter Sherman (140) and Kyle Skotak (145). Recording his first high school win was freshman 112-pounder Josh Watson, who pinned his Dexter opponent in 1:05.
