Livonia Churchill's basketball team saw Kari and Sara Schmitt's
shadows Tuesday, which means six more weeks of sunny skies for the
Canton girls basketball team.
The Schmitt twins dominated the paint, combining for 20 points
in the Chiefs' 48-20 victory. Sara Schmitt twined 11 points; Kari
Schmitt scored nine points while hauling down 10 rebounds and ripping
five steals.
CarolAnn Sexauer (eight points) and Kayla Bridges (six points,
eight rebounds) also made key contributions to the winners' efforts.
Erin Menard led Churchill with eight points.
"The key to our success all season has been our solid team
effort, and that's what led us tonight," said Canton coach Brian
Samulski. "All nine girls come and bring it."
Canton roared to a 13-4 first-quarter lead before outscoring
their hosts, 11-1, in the second quarter. The Chiefs put the game away
in the third by outscoring the Chargers, 14-6, to seize a 38-11
advantage.
"We had overall team balance tonight," Samulski said. "Robyn
Mack, Lindsey Winters and Alyssa Cottrell all scored four points.
Cottrell's points came in the first period and really helped us get off
to a good start."
Canton, which is ranked anywhere from second to fourth in the
assorted Class A polls, improved to 12-1 overall and 7-0 in the KLAA
South Division. Churchill slipped to 7-6 and 2-5, respectively.
The Chiefs were perfect from the line, burying all eight of
their free throws.
