Franklin will provide tough test for Chiefs on Homecoming

  BY ED WRIGHT

Canton's football team can further distance itself from the rest of the KLAA South Division field tonight, but it's not going to be easy.

The Chiefs will host Livonia Franklin on Homecoming night. The opening kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the PCEP varsity stadium.

The Patriots, who are 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the division, are coming off a stinging six-point setback to Westland John Glenn, which lost to Canton 44-6 two weeks ago.

Canton, on the other hand, rolled over Wayne Memorial, 49-14.

Don't read too much into last week's Patriots results, Canton coach Tim Baechler warned.

"Franklin was missing six starters last week," he said, "and they almost beat a very good John Glenn team any way. I don't know who they'll have back against us, but I know they're a good football team.

"They remind me a lot of us. They want to run the ball and they're big up front. Their offensive linemen are all around 240, 245. They like to run their fullback a lot and they have a good short-passing game."

The Chiefs have outscored their first five opponents 183-33.
