Chiefs continue to tear through tough schedule, blank Pioneer

If there's a boys soccer team out there that has played a tougher early-season schedule than Canton, may the soccer gods have mercy on it.

The Chiefs, who have yet to play an official home game, continued to rise to the challenge as road warriors as they thumped Ann Arbor Pioneer, 2-0, Monday.

The victory improved coach George Tomasso's squad to 4-1-1.

Canton has posted four consecutive shutout victories, including wins over formidable foes Novi, Walled Lake Western and Dexter.

Brandon Laabs notched his third goose-egg of the season Monday, stopping a pair of point-blank corner-kick opportunities by the Pioneers.

Offensively, Canton opened the scoring seven minutes in when junior Shean Krolicki found sophomore Scott Piwowar on the left edge of the box. Piwowar scored his first varsity goal when he took a couple of touches before driving the ball behind the Pioneer keeper.

The teams swapped possessions and scoring opportunities the remainder of the first half and most of the second until the Chiefs added an insurance marker late in the game. Mitch Posuniak held the ball in the middle of the field until Krolicki joined the attack. Posuniak's through ball released Krolicki, who iced the victory with a break-away net-finder with less than 10 seconds to play.

Defensively, the winners were paced by Connor Furgason, Kyle Krause, Tyler Winningham, Connor Shennan and Neil Zech.
