Canton wrestling coach Cory Mancuso asked his team to step up --
literally -- before its season-opening match against Riverview
Wednesday night, and the Chiefs obliged.
Canton won nine of the 14 matches to nearly triple-up the
Sharks, 49-18.
"Our team had to overcome a lot of adversity this week," said
Mancuso. "We asked a lot of kids to step up and wrestled at higher
weights and they went out and battled tonight. Hats off to our three
freshmen -- Jevon Hill, Ben Griffin and Alec Pantaleo -- who came out
and got bonus points for the team.
"I was probably the most happy with how Alex Eimers battled one
of the best wrestlers in the state, Chris Carroll. He went out and
scored the first takedown and made a few mistakes, which ended up
costing him the match, but he really battled."
