One look at the final result of Canton's game against Novi
Thursday night is sure to spark a one-word response from southeastern
Michigan high school soccer fans: Wow!
The Chiefs proved to be superior in all phases of the game,
blanking the always-strong Wildcats, 4-0, to improve to 2-1-1.
Although the showing was impressive, Chiefs head coach George
Tomasso has a three-word response to anyone who thinks the victory is a
sure sign of greatness: Not so fast!
"The result was strong and the team played very, very well, but
it's still very early in the season," cautioned Tomasso. "This team
still has a lot to do to define itself as a threat to win a state
championship."
Canton struck early, seizing a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the
contest when junior captain Connor Furgason dribbled up the field
before delivering a perfect cross to Mitch Posuniak, who buried the
shot for the first half's lone goal.
The Chiefs doubled their lead to 2-0 less than two minutes into
the second half when junior Nathan Bergeson converted a rebound shot
from sophomore Scott Piwowar, who registered his first varsity point.
Canton cemented its cushion mid-way through the half on Bryan
Ren's first varsity goal and put the Wildcats away two minutes later
when Bergeson took advantage of a Novi defensive miscue to score his
second goal of the night.
Senior goal-keeper Brandon Laabs wasn't tested often, but came
up big when he was to record his second shutout of the season.
Novi slipped to 2-1.
Canton returns to action Friday night when it travels to Walled
Lake Western.
