If Walled Lake Western's boys soccer team wasn't familiar with
Bobby Budlong prior to Friday night's game against Canton, it is now.
Budlong made a lasting impression on the Warriors, scoring three
goals and narrowly missing on two more to lead the Chiefs to an
emphatic 6-0 victory at Western.
The Chiefs finished their two-night swing through Oakland County
by outscoring their talented foes 10-0. Canton walloped Novi, 4-0, on
Thursday.
Coach George Tomasso's club will take a 3-1-1 mark into Monday's
5:30 p.m. contest at perennial power Ann Arbor Pioneer.
"Bobby had an exceptional game and the rest of the team kind of
fed off his leadership by example," said Tomasso. "The entire team
played very well. Walled Lake Western is a very difficult place to play
because the field runs east-west and you're playing into the setting
sun, but everybody really stepped up and played well."
Senior net-minder Brandon Laabs notched his third shutout of the
season.
"Brandon came up with a huge save when the game was still
scoreless in the first half," said Tomasso.
Budlong opened the scoring in the game's 23rd minute when he
settled a pass in the box from Brian Berinti and ripped a low shot past
the Warriors' keeper.
Budlong struck again with nine minutes to play in the first half
when a through ball from Tyler Winningham released him on a run up the
middle of the field.
The Winningham-Budlong combo struck again seven minutes into the
second stanza when Budlong headed in a Winningham cross on the back
post.
Five minutes later, Budlong's shot from the top of the box was
deflected in by Berinti to pad the Chiefs' lead to 4-0.
Canton's pressure paid off two more times in the final 11
minutes when Connor Furgason's through ball set up Bryan Ren; and when
Garrett Derian-Toth deposited the ball into the back of the net after
receiving a nice dish from Shean Krolicki.
