Canton's balanced attack too much for Rockets in South Division meet

April 20, 2010, 1:25 a.m.

A couple of photo-finish showdowns between two of the fastest high school spritners in Wayne County highlighted Tuesday afternoon's Canton-John Glenn boys track-and-field meet.

John Glenn speedster Jeremy Langford, who is headed to Michigan State University with a football scholarship, and Canton sophomore Kevin Buford electrified the crowd by battling stride for stride for stride in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Langford barely finished first in both races, but it wasn't enough as the Chiefs came away with an 82-55 victory to improve their KLAA SOuth Division record at 1-1. The Rockets slipped to 0-2.

Langford won the 100 in 11.1 seconds, two-tenths of a second faster than Buford. Both runners were clocked in 22.6 in the 200, but Langford out-leaned Buford.

Other highlights for the Chiefs were Nick Alaniva's two firsts -- a season-best 13 feet, 1.5-inch effort in the pole vault and a 20-4 leap in the long jump -- and Ma Schmiel's first-place showing in the 800-meter run.

"We're focusing on Thursday's City Meet, so we juggled some things up a little bit and scaled back some of our middle-distance runners," said Canton coach Bob Richardson. "We improved a lot in the field events, too. Overall, I was pleased."
