Firsts are nice, but they don't always win swim meets.

Case in point: Tuesday's entertaining P-CEP dual meet featuring Canton and Salem.

The Rocks touched first in eight of the 12 events, but it was the Chiefs who survived with a 96-89 victory.

"Our depth is what won us tonight's meet," said Canton coach Ed Weber, whose team improved to 6-0-1. "There were certain events that Salem was going to win; there was nothing we could do about it. But we needed to get the seconds, thirds and fourths, and we did."

Weber gave huge props to Sara Schmitt, who picked up third-place points in the 50-yard freestyle; Kayla Eyster, who was fourth in the 100 free; and Kelly Bedro, who was third in the 100 breast.

"Salem has some very talented swimmers," Weber continued. "No one is better than Lauren Seroka. Abby Aumiller is fabulous and Emily Nelson is very good. But our depth pulled us through tonight.

"As a team, we had a great meet tonight."

The Chiefs' first-place points came from freshman Destinee Barmore-Hicks, who won the 50 free in 25.82 and the 100 free in 56.04; senior Robyn Piwowar, who won the 1-meter diving event with 217.45 points; and Sara Krebs, who touched first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.13.

The meet's final result was still in doubt heading into the final event of the night: the 400 freestyle relay. The Chiefs needed at least a second-place showing and they got it from the foursome of Delaney Adams, Kayla Eyster, Kari Schmitt and Barmore-Hicks.

Several Rocks rose to the occasion, including freshman Julia Suriano, who won the 200 freestyle (2:00.28) and the 500 freestyle (5:25.30); Emily Nelson, who outstroked the competition in the 100 backstroke; Abby Aumiller, who won the 200 IM; and freshman Claire Amin, who took first in the 100 butterfly.
