Canton's soccer team scored more goals during a three-day
stretch this week than most teams score in a month.
Forty-eight hours after Tuesday's 8-0 romp over Westland John
Glenn, the Chiefs wore out the nets again in Thursday's 9-1 squashing
of a resurgent Livonia Franklin squad.
The Patriots were coming off an impressive win over Livonia
Churchill, but they couldn't hang with the suddenly surging Chiefs, who
were fueled by Mitch Posuniak's four-goal night.
The victory improved Canton's record to 8-2-1 overall and 3-1 in
the KLAA South Division. The loss dropped the Pats to 7-2 and 3-1,
respectively.
Posuniak got things rolling quickly, scoring in the fourth
minute off a cross from Tyler Winningham.
Four minutes later senior Phil Baciak deposited his first goal
of the season (and first of two in the game) when he knocked home Dan
Ovesea's post-banger.
Posuniak made it 3-0 in the game's 11th minute when he
intercepted a mis-clear by the Franklin keeper and hit a no-doubter
into the back of the mesh.
Baciak struck again seven minutes before halftime, scoring on a
rebound shot that was nearly identical to his first goal. Posuniak was
the one who dented the post on this sequence.
Franklin tried to battle back, cutting its deficit to 4-1 on
Jordan McGuire's tally less than a minute later, but Canton regained
the momentum heading into halftime when Posuniak scored off a cross in
the box from Ovesea.
Whatever strategy Franklin drew up during the intermission
didn't work as Posuniak scored off a rebound of a Bobby Budlong direct
kick less than a minute into the second half.
Ovesea (from Connor Shennan), Scott Piwowar (from Bryan Ren) and
Brian Berinti (unassisted) closed out the rout for the winners.
Seniors Brandon Laabs and Garren Carr split time in net for the
Chiefs, who face a critical week next week with games against
Churchill, Plymouth and Northville.
