
Canton's
girls tennis team opened its defense of the KLAA South Division title
by overwhelming Wayne Memorial Tuesday afternoon, 9-0.
"It was a great win against some very nice opponents," said
Canton coach Barb Lehmann.
No. 1 singles player Megan Leung sparked the one-sided victory
with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Wayne's Morgan Greig.
The Chiefs' completed the singles sweep thanks to victories by
No. 2 player Taylor Eppler, who swept Megan McGregor, 6-2, 6-2; No. 3
netter Jaclyn Hollingsworth, who blanked Stephanie Tomlin, 6-0, 6-0;
and No. 4 player Sydney Liedel, who handled Xi Yan Wang, 6-0, 6-1.
Canton's Kayla Davis and Brittany Vance set the tone for the
doubles sweep by overpowering Alicia Evans and Melinda Powers, 6-0,
6-2, at No. 1.
Also recording triumphant efforts in doubles were the No. 2 team
of Kelsey Mason and Janani Shanmuga, who defeated Lil Reid and Cailee
Pargudo, 6-1, 6-1; the No. 3 team of Catherine Sanctorum and Kaitlyn
Bunyak, who throttled Ashlee Szabo and Zoie Smallwood, 6-0, 6-0; the
No. 4 tandem of Samantha Klott and Hayley Cook, who outswung Victoria
Baker and Destiny Bullock, 6-0, 6-1; and the No. 5 team of Neena
Baghaie and Lauren Tomei, who swept Lynn Mathen and Brie Wilson, 6-2,
6-3.
In an exhibition match, Canton's Erin Flower and Hannah Ferree
defeated Sarah Marshall and Sam Collins, 8-2.
The Chiefs will take on cross-campus rival Plymouth on Thursday
before heading to Monroe for a tournament on Saturday.
