Chiefs soar to third at
Farmington Invitational

Jan. 20., 2010, 7:32 p.m.

A couple point-gobbling falls couldn't keep Canton's deep and talented gymnastics team out of the top three at Saturday's Farmington Invitational meet.

The Chiefs, who posted a 140.45 score, placed third behind only host Farmington (146.6 points) and Northville (143.8).

"Not bad," said Canton coach John Cunningham, when asked to assess his team's performance. "It's hard to say we did great because we had some crucial falls. If the falls would have made a difference in the place we finished, I'd have been more upset.

"This definitely leaves us with some room for improvement. It wasn't a bad meet for us. It was good enough for third."

Finishing behind Canton were Brighton (139.20), Livonia Blue (139.0), Grosse Pointe (138.3) and Livonia Red (134.85).

Canton's top two performers were Robyn Piwowar and Ayanna Lewis. Piwowar earned an all-around score of 36.05, which was good enough for sixth in Division 1. Lewis's 35.2 placed her second in Division 2.

Piwowar's top scores came in the vault (fourth with a 9.3), uneven bars (eighth with an 8.5), balance beam (eighth with an 8.45) and floor exercise (third with a 9.45).

Mallory Hudak placed eighth on the vault in Division 2 with an 8.95. Also scoring on bars were Lewis (fifth in Division 2 with an 8.7), Alex Fideler (ninth in Division 1 with an 8.75) and Brittany Granowicz (11th in Division 2 with an 8.4).

Lewis recorded a sixth-place 9.0 on the beam in Division 2 while Fideler tied Piwowar for eighth with an 8.45 in Division 1.

Lewis placed third in D2 with a floor-ex score of 9.1. Fideler was seventh in the event in D1 with a 9.15 while Hudak was eighth in D2 with an 8.85.
