Canton's girls golf team got off to a blazing start this week,
defeating Wayne Memorial, 203-292 on Monday before topping Westland
John Glenn, 201-267, on Wednesday.
Freshman Kelsey McDougall paced the Chiefs against the Zebras,
firing a 49, two shots better than senior Mary Elizabeth Winther and
junior Paige Osler. Sophomore Katelyn Adams also scored for the
winners, carding a 52.
Ariel Alber (54) and Kaylie Lobb (55) competed but did not score.
"It was hot -- 93 degrees -- but we managed to shoot some pretty
consistent scores for our first match," said Canton coach Tom Alles.
"Kelsey McDougall has shown good skills for an incoming freshman. She
will see a lot of varsity action this season."
In the decisive victory over the Rockets, Winther sparkled with
a 48 on the par-36 Fellows Creek layout. Alber (49), McDougall (51) and
Adams (53) also scored. Lobb fired a 59 and Kayla Lagola shot a 69.
"Once again it was warm (90 degrees) and the wind was a factor
(15 to 20 miles per hour)," said Alles. "I was pleased with the scoring
consistency considering it was our first away match. We are continuing
to look for players at five and six who can regularly break 55.
"I think our top four girls will continue to play well. One of
our team goals is to get to where we can shoot below 200 in our
matches."
