Canton lacrosse team outduels WLN

March 29, 2010, 10:02 p.m.

Canton's lacrosse team opened its 2010 season Friday night with an impressive 12-10 victory over visiting Walled Lake Northern.

The final score was deceptively close as the Chiefs never trailed and led by as many as five goals at one point.

Matt Rodgers was the Chiefs' catalyst, scoring seven goals while adding one helper. Tim Popp added three goals and a pair of assists.

Also scoring for the winners were Trevor Moore (one goal), Jake Underwood (one goal, three assists), Jon Rocheleau (one assist) and Jordan Smith (two assists).

Senior captain Sean Walsh anchored the defense with 13 saves in front of the net, including some clutch fourth-quarter stops.

The Chiefs led 8-3 at halftime before holding off a late Knights' charge.

Coach Kevin Riley commended the play of senior defensemen Ryan Dunleavy and Alec Gilo.

The Chiefs return to action Wednesday when they travel to Lakeland to battle Huron Valley before trekking to Clarkston on Thursday.
