Chiefs golfers edged by Franklin

Every stroke mattered in Wednesday's KLAA South Division showdown between the Canton and Livonia Franklin girls golf teams.

The Patriots sank one long putt more than the Chiefs to win by the length of a tee, 214-215, at Idylwyld Golf Course in Livonia. The result left both teams with 4-3 records.

Kelsey McDougall paced the Chiefs with a 52. Also scoring for Canton were Ariel Alber (54), Chloe Luyet (54) and Paige Osler (55). Mary Elizabeth Winther (56) and Katie Adams (67) also played on Canton's varsity squad.

The Patriots' Lexi Smith was the match medalist, carding a 48. Haley Szpara (54), Lucie Patrite (56) and Kelsey Gregorio (56) scored for Franklin.

"Sometimes a 48 is all it takes," said Canton coach Tom Alles. "We need to find at least one girl who can consistently break 50. If we had been able to do that today, we win.

"Franklin played inspired golf and deserved to win the match. It is always difficult to win on a course that you have not played before and half our squad had not played Idylwyld until today."

The Chiefs return to action Monday at Hilltop against Livonia Churchill.
