Canton's wrestling team started the 2009-10 season with a 42-27
win over the Riverview Pirates, who featured four wrestlers currently
ranked by MichiganGrappler.com.
Riverview had beaten the Chiefs at the Woodhaven Duals less than
a year ago.
"It felt good to start the season off with a win," said Canton
coach Cory Mancuso. "Riverview is a well-coached team and they gave us
a real battle tonight.
"Ben Poirer, Waleed Faraj and Brent Winekoff really stepped it
up and got us the pins we needed tonight. Brent showed a lot of courage
being able to go out there with an injured shoulder and get us a pin
tonight. It says a lot about his character and commitment to our team."
Canton featured five ranked wrestlers, each of whom won.
After giving up a void at 103, Riverview scored three major
decisions in a row to take a 12-6 lead. Waleed Faraj and Zach Marsh
defeated their freshmen opponents to put Canton back on top.
In the only match-up to feature two ranked opponents, Canton's
Donnie Watkins (ranked No. 1 at 140) defeated Steve Warrington (No. 7
at 135) by technical fall.
With the match tied at 21-all, Canton ripped off four
consecutive victories to put things out of reach for the Pirates.
