First-quarter dominance leads
Chiefs over South Lyon, 54-27

Dec. 18, 2009, 3:15 p.m.

Ignited by a 17-2 first-quarter run, Canton's girls basketball team doubled up South Lyon Thursday night, 54-27, to improve to 3-1. The Lions slipped to 1-1.

Kari Schmitt notched a double-double for the winners, scoring 14 points to complement her 13 rebounds.

Sara Schmitt, Kayla Bridges and CarolAnn Sexauer all poured in eight points a piece for Canton.

"I thought we had a nice first quarter; we really got after them on defense," said Canton coach Brian Samulski. "They try to run a lot of sets and we were able to disrupt that. We didn't want them to get into their offense too much.

"I thought we did a really nice job on their best player, Kristen Short, who only had six points. We did a solid job of staying in front of her."

Canton lead 28-12 at the half and 42-20 with eight minutes to play.

"We didn't come out at the start of the third quarter real great," Samulski said. "That's one thing we need to work on."

Canton hit 11 of 18 free throws. South Lyon was 8 for 11 from the charity stripe.

Canton returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Farmington Hills Mercy.
