Judging by its performance in Saturday's season-opening Livonia
Ladywood Tournament, 2010 could be a banner season for Canton's
volleyball team.
The Chiefs won the event by upending the host Blazers, 28-26 and
25-22, in the championship match and going 5-0-1 on the day.
"We played strong throughout the entire day," said Canton coach
Mary Kryska. "We came out strong and finished strong, which was an
improvement form how we have been practicing lately. We had a
three-hour break, which made us a bit flat, but we picked it up quickly
after calling a timeout.
"The offense has been doing an amazing job with running
different plays that have been our main focus in practice.
Serve-receive could still use some work, but it was also better than
our performance in practice. Our servers are very aggressive and
consistent, which also has helped us a lot."
The Chiefs went 2-0-1 in pool play, splitting with Ann Arbor
Pioneer before knocking off Mason and Capac.
Canton sidelined Garden City in the quarterfinals, 25-22 and
25-13, before besting the Pioneers in the semis, 25-22, 20-25 and
15-10.
Standouts included Alaina Turner (29 kills, 19 aces, 12 blocks),
Kristen Muir (32 kills, 60 digs, 15 aces and three blocks), Erica
denBoer (17 kills), Maggie Deloy (18 kills 39 digs and four blocks),
Jackie Waite (44 assists, three aces and 22 digs) and Lauren Martin,
who compiled 30 assists, six aces and 24 digs.
