Canton's volleyball team shrugged off a slow start and surged to a nip-and-tuck 23-25, 25-23, 25-13, 25-23 triumph over Westland John Glenn Tuesday night.

The victory improved the Chiefs to 19-6-2 overall and 6-1 in the KLAA South Division.

"We started out very slow in the first game and it wasn't until they were up 15-6 that we decided we should start playing volleyball," said Canton coach Mary Kryska. "Their defense was incredible and it started to frustrate our hitters, but we kept hitting and played smart."

The Chiefs fell behind by five points early in the second game before prevailing to draw even at one game a piece.

"We gained our confidence back after winning the second game," Kryska noted.

Alex Bryden's strong serving ignited an early 8-0 Canton run and the Chiefs never looked back the rest of the night.

"Alex has proven to be one of our best servers when it comes to aggressiveness and consistency," Kryska said, praising Bryden.

Bryden finished with eight digs and seven aces.

Other standouts included Kristen Muir (11 kills, 29 digs), Alaina Turner (15 kills, five blocks and five aces), Erica den Boer (seven kills and 19 digs), Maggie Deloy (six kills), Jackie Waite (18 assists, nine digs) and Lauren Martin, who recorded 23 assists, 13 digs and four kills.
