On the day before a lot of
people take a beating from the IRS, Canton's baseball team put a hurt
on Wayne Memorial's E.R.A.
The Chiefs improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Kensington
Lakes Activities Association's South Division Wednesday afternoon by
sweeping the Zebras, 12-0 and 15-3, in a pair of mercy-rule-shortened
five-inning contests.
"It's exciting to see the kids playing so well," said Canton
coach Mark Blomshield. "We're really executing offensively, playing
well defensively and getting solid pitching -- the three things it
takes to win."
Game one of the twinbill was almost over before it began thanks
to a five-run first for the Chiefs combined with a dominating effort
from senior starting pitcher Kevin Delapaz, who struck out seven and
allowed just three hits in four innings. Mark Main pitched the fifth
for the Chiefs, retiring three of the four batters he faced.
Leading the Chiefs 11-hit attack were Cody Blakita (2-for-3),
Joe Galanty (2-for-2, two runs), Andrew Tidwell (1-for-2, two RBI), Ben
Staley (2-for-3, two RBI) and Angelo Lanava (2-for-3, RBI).
Although the double-header was played at Canton, the Chiefs were
technically the visitors, which didn't seem to faze their hitting
strokes. Canton tallied three runs in the first, five in the second,
one in the third and six in the fourth.
The Zebras pushed across a pair in the first inning and one in
the second.
Junior starter Chris Perkovich picked up the win, allowing one
earned run and two hits in two innings. Sean Harte pitched a perfect
third inning before Ben Staley slammed the door on the Zebras over the
final two frames, whiffing four of the six batters he faced.
Junior catcher Seth Tschetter had a proficient day at the plate
in game two, going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Garrett Bryden was
super-efficient, knocking in five runs on just one hit.
Canton will compete in a tournament in Milan on Saturday before
hosting state-ranked Novi on Monday.
