Sluggish Chief spikers sweep Zebras in three

Canton's volleyball team swept Wayne Memorial, 25-10, 25-17, 25-20, Thursday night in the final KLAA South match for both teams.

"We started slow and got even slower," said Canton head coach Mary Kryska. "We really lacked intensity.

"We had two starters missing due to injury and illness, but we have a strong bench that could take over and they did great."

The Chiefs received strong efforts from their outside hitters: Jordan Kielty, who had eight kills, and freshman Eric denBoer, who had six.

"Everyone on the team contributed to this win and I was happy to see everyone getting varsity experience."

Sophomore setter Jackie Waite excelled with 11 assists.

"Jackie also stepped it up on defense," Kryska added.

Kielty contributed a team-high 14 digs. Lauren Macuga notched 10 digs and denBoer had seven.

"Overall, it was a good experience for all, but we needed to step it up and not give as many errors as we have in the last couple of matches."
