Marty
Altounian and
assistant coach Mike Gaffke will try to have the Chargers rebound after
a second
rough season in a row. Two
years ago, injury, illness, and low numbers meant that Churchill had to
void
weight classes, and some of their best wrestlers could not compete in
the
post-season. Last year, the Chargers
could fill their roster, but many of the varsity starters had no
previous
wrestling experience. Nonetheless, four
wrestlers were regional qualifiers and two moved on to the state
tournament.
Four starters from
last year’s squad have graduated, Jared Buhagiar (140), Tyler Farnstrom
(152),
Curtis Castleberry (171, state qualifier), and Jon Shekell (285,
regional
qualifier).
Churchill had a
large freshman class last year, and have a decent sized one this year. Very few wrestlers were lost to attrition
which means that 35-40 kids are on the team right now.
State qualifier Jacob Meadows and regional
qualifier Jonny Bannoura are back, as are fellow seniors Killian Diaz,
Mike
Harp, and James Locklear. Most other
spots will be filled by sophomores with only one year of experience.
Below is a guess at the Charger varsity line-up:
103 – Jon Locklear (So)
112 – Jake Hale (So)
119 – Jacob Meadows (Sr)
125 – James Locklear (Sr)
130 – Addel Yaffai (So)
135 – Ben Leck (So)
140 – Jonny Bannoura (Sr)
145 – Josh Bridge (Jr)
152 – Devin Hawkins (So) or Dan King (So)
160 – Cody Carrier (So)
171 – Jon Ristola (So)
189 – Mike Harp (Sr)
215 – Dillon Morantes (So)
285 – Killian Diaz (Sr)
