New Clarenceville head coach, Aaron Davis, has been stressing the importance of strong fundamentals from the first day of practice.  Apparently, it will take more than 2 weeks for his new approach to sink in.  “It never fails,” exclaims Davis, “even when kids drill, practice, and wrestle foolproof all week in practice, you throw a ref in front of them and a crowd and all the bad habits come screaming out at once.”

The Redford Union Panthers had something to do with knocking the Trojans off their game plan too.  The strength of the Panther team lies in the upper weights, and starting off at 171 pounds was ideal for them.  Redford Union won 9 of the first 11 matches before voiding the final 3.

Most impressive was the 7-4 decision at heavyweight by Christian Colon over Anthony Giordano, who is ranked 6th in Division 3 by MichiganGrappler.com.

Sophomore Mike Weiss looked good for Clarenceville and freshman Steve Spens came through with a big pin over the very talented and experienced RU freshman, Stephen Knox.  “Mikey Weiss did a great job of adjusting to a bigger weight class and looked to hold his own pretty well, Freshman Stephen Spens was the surprise of the night, brought good smart solid basics out to the mat and had his hand raised twice,” stated
Davis.  The final score of the first dual was RU 51, Clarenceville 30.

Coach Davis pulled his team aside and had “a little talk” following the Redford Union dual.  It apparently worked because the Trojans stormed back and defeated the
Livonia Franklin “B” team 58-24.  Clarenceville only lost 2 of the matches that were wrestled – the other points were lost because of voids.
