Canton's girls basketball team solidified its supremacy in the
KLAA South Division Friday night, racing past Westland John Glenn,
61-22, to improve its division mark to 10-0.
The Chiefs, who are 15-1 overall and ranked No. 3 in Division 1,
will host a first-round KLAA tournament game Tuesday at 7 p.m. against
the No. 4 seed from the Central Division.
Canton snuffed out any upset plans the Rockets may have harbored
by outscoring its hosts 16-2 in the first quarter. The Chiefs led 33-10
at the half and 51-15 with eight minutes left.
Junior forward Kari Schmitt had a huge night for the winners,
registering 22 points, six rebounds, five steals and three blocks. Sara
Schmitt also sparkled, netting 11 points and six rebounds.
Also making major contributions to the Chiefs' offensive efforts
were CarolAnn Sexauer (nine points), Kayla Bridges (eight) and Alyssa
Cottrell (six).
"It was a solid game all around," said Canton coach Brian
Samulski. "Hopefully can take this momentum into the conference
tournament."
Canton was 10 for 15 at the free throw line. The Rockets, who
slipped to 5-11 overall and 4-6 in the division, made five of eight
free throws.
