Kevin Weisz was Mr. First Half and Brandon Duffey was Mr. Second
Half for Canton's basketball team Tuesday night against host Walled
Lake Central.
And, as usual, Dietrich Lever was Mr. Four Quarters.
The trio combined forces to lead the Chiefs to a resounding
61-46 triumph over a very solid Vikings contingent.
Weisz was on fire around the perimeter, nailing five triples,
including a 24-foot buzzer-beater just before the half that boosted
Canton's lead to 32-22.
Duffey picked up the slack in the second half for the winners,
scoring all 15 of his points while adding five rebounds and two steals.
Lever, the Chiefs' lightning-quick junior point guard, stuffed
his stat line with all kinds of big numbers, netting 14 points, seven
assists, six steals and two rebounds.
"We played solid all night defensively," said Canton coach Jimmy
Reddy, whose team capped its regular season with a stellar 14-6 record.
"We were good offensively in the second half. Dietrich did a great job
of getting people the ball in positions to score."
Weisz finished with a game-high 21 points. His front-court mate
Paul Baumgart also turned in a strong effort, registering six points
and eight rebounds.
Canton led from the get-go, torching the nets for 17
first-quarter points before taking a 10-point lead into the half. The
Chiefs led 44-33 after three quarters before outscoring the Vikings,
17-13, over the final eight minutes.
Canton hit 10 of 14 free throws. Central was four of seven from
the line.
The Chiefs open next week's Class A District tournament at Novi
on Monday at 5 p.m. against PCEP rival Salem.
"Ever since we lost to Salem about a week and a half ago, we've
gotten better each time out," said Reddy. "Hopefully, we can keep
improving into next week. It is a very tough District that any of those
teams could win."
