Goble-Rolfe showdown
hits legendary status

I'm not positive, but I believe more people voted in the Plymouth High School male athlete segment of "Who's the Greatest Athlete at the Park from 2000-09?" than voted in the recent Detroit mayoral election.

What's more impressive is that you can only vote once on my website. I'm not sure we can say the same for the Detroit election.

Ronnie Goble, who hit running backs and fast balls with equal ferocity during his four-year stay at Plymouth, survived a valiant effort by Colin Rolfe, amassing over 1,600 votes.

Rolfe collected over 1,300 votes and lost. Amazing. I think that number of votes would have made him governor of Rhode Island back in 2008.

Either of these student-athletes would have been worthy of the honor. Both excellent students, they were the best at what they did at Plymouth during the past decade.

Goble, who was a two-way, every-down player on the football team and a heart-of-the-lineup slugger/center

fielder for the Wildcats' baseball squad, is currently a linebacker at Bowling Green State University.

Rolfe, who possessed the finest offensive skills of any high school soccer player I've ever seen in addition to being an outstanding forward on the Wildcats' hockey team, was named to the Big East All-Conference team this past fall, one year after being named the league's "Rookie of the Year" as a freshman.

Like I said, either one was worthy.

Goble will join Canton's Shawn Little in the "Who's the Greatest Male Athlete at the Park - 2000-09?" final, which will kick off Friday. The third finalist will be determined at midnight Thursday.

The female finals, which will run from Feb. 2-5, includes Salem's Jordan Falcusan, Plymouth's Janet Hanchett and Canton's Allison Schmitt.

Thanks to everyone who has taken part in the poll.

The eventual winners will receive either a full-expenses-paid, one-week stay in Hawaii or a PlymouthCantonSports.com T-shirt. I'm discussing the matter with my accountant as I type.

What's that? My accountant says he's figured out the prize, and it's good news for the winners -- a one-of-a-kind PlymouthCantonSports.com T-shirt.

Hey, it's been a little chilly in Hawaii the past few weeks any way.
