One of the unfortunate flaws of high-level high school sports is that
athletes can perform like a million bucks for three months but walk out
of their competitive arenas on the final day of the season feeling as
low as a Canadian penny.
The higher the level you excel at all season, the more intense
the sting of that season-ending defeat becomes, especially for true
competitors.
Case in point: Canton's remarkable girls basketball team.
After running the table since Dec. 10, the Chief girls tasted
defeat for just the second time this season Friday afternoon, 50-47, to
Detroit Renaissance in one of the most scintillating games you'd ever
want to see.
Unfazed by the big stage and bright lights of the Breslin
Center, coach Brian Samulski's team played just about as

well
as it can play before getting sidelined in a Class A semifinal game by
a Renaissance contingent that grabbed just a few more offensive
rebounds and got a couple more good bounces.
The Chiefs walked off the court bearing the weight of the
disappointment that comes with coming up just short after pouring so
much of their heart and soul into a months-long mission.
Let's hope that in these days following the tough loss to the
Phoenix, the Chiefs can truly grasp what an inspiration they were to
those who closely followed them this winter.
In the eyes of their families, friends and die-hard fans,
they are true champions, regardless of what the Breslin Center
scoreboard flashed Friday afternoon.
One more note on the Chiefs: It was nice to see they finally
received the fan support they deserved all season at Friday's semifinal
game. Great job by the members of the student cheering section who made
the trek to East Lansing.
(EDITOR'S NOTE: Due to technical difficulties, last week's
column on my NCAA men's basketball tournament picks mistakenly
listed "Kansas" as my overall champion. It should have read "Kentucky".
My spell-checker must have accidentally inserted the Jayhawks even
though I knew all along they would get knocked off by Northern Iowa in
the second round. You just can't trust computers these days!)
