Patriots pin down fifth straight
district wrestling title

Livonia Franklin captured its fifth consecutive team district title with convincing wins over Livonia Churchill and Livonia Stevenson.  In the first match of the evening, Franklin was looking for revenge after falling to the Chargers 38-36 on January 13.

The Patriots started out strong, winning the first four matches, but Churchill countered by winning three of the next four.
Franklin’s light weights were just overpowering and ripped off five straight victories, leading to a rather lopsided score of 55-18.  The most exciting match of the dual occurred when Churchill’s Jacob Meadows bumped up to take on Steve Tuyo at 119 pounds.

With the match knotted at 2-all midway through the third period, Tuyo hit a headlock and Meadows rolled through and ended up behind Tuyo.  Meadows obviously took too long to roll through because the referee scored it a take-down with 2 near fall and a reversal.  The final score was 6-4, Tuyo.

Livonia Stevenson had little trouble with host Garden City, winning 54-17.  The Cougars have a very young team and they wrestled hard, but the more experienced Spartans seemed to turn every Garden City mistake into a fall.  However, in the district final, it was Franklin that seemed to turn every Spartan mistake into a fall.

On paper, it seemed like Stevenson should have the upper hand at the higher weights, but “on paper” doesn’t count.  The duel started at 145 pounds and Franklin won the first five matches, essentially wrapping up the district championship.

The biggest blows to Stevenson happened at 160 and 171 pounds where
Franklin wrestlers worked off their backs and ended up pinning their opponents.  The final score was 45-20, Livonia Franklin.
