Catholic Central pins down titles

  The 44th Annual Garden City Novice Wrestling Tournament featured hundreds of wrestlers from 23 schools. Thirteen of those schools were from the Observerland area, and those wrestlers pretty much dominated the competition.

  Leading the way was Catholic Central. The Shamrocks entered 13 wrestlers in both the freshman and sophomore divisions, and captured first place in both. Champions were freshmen Mike Babicz (140) and Jay Peterson (189), and sophomores Matt Longe (160) and Mike Popiela (285).

  Host Garden City entered nine wresterls in both the freshman and sophommore divisions and came in second and ninth, respectively. Freshman champions were Brian Spehar (119) and Zac Brock (285).

  Wayne Memorial entered the most wrestlers of any school, 11 freshmen and 16 sophomores, and captured fifth and second place, respectively. Their lone champion was sophomore Cody Allen (130), but 14 Wolfpack grapplers had only one loss.

  John Glenn entered 13 freshmen and five sophomores and finished seventh and third, respectively. Champions were freshmen Austin Hartford (103) and Justin Powers (145), and sophomores Kevin Wacker (145) and Danny Croft (152). Seven other Rockets suffered single losses.

  Livonia Chruchill captured third place in the freshman division with 11 wrestlers. Addel Yaffai (119) and Dillon Morantes (215) were champions. Only two Chargers competed in the sophomore division and both Mike Harp (189) and Killian Diaz (285) lost their first matches, but won the rest and finished fifth.

  Other freshmen champions from Observerland schools were Richard DeMarois (103, Canton), Mike Karizat (125, Salem), George Gardner (135, Harrison), and Ryan Southerland (160, Farmington). Sophomore champions were Nimantha Herath (103, Farmington), Brian Nisun (119, Livonia Franklin), and Kienuwa Davis (125, Farmington).
