Leading up to Thursday's
Bolger-Mangan Memorial City Meet, Salem's distance crew was
carrying most of the load for the Rocks.
But on Thursday, it was the team's sprinters who were doing some
serious haulin'.
The Rocks captured their second City Meet title in the past
three seasons when they chalked up 66.5 points, six more than runner-up
Canton. Plymouth placed third with 50.5 points.
"We've been counting on our distance girls all year, but the
sprinters really stepped up today," said Salem coach Dale Maskill. "We
won the 400 relay and took second in the four-by-two, which was huge.
"Khyli Ray stepped up, Breanna Frye had a good day and Deja
Wright ran well. It was a nice team effort."
Maskill also pointed to the 1,600-meter run when asked for keys
to the Rocks' success.
"Amanda Beyer cut 10 seconds off her previous PR to finish third
and Emily Bizon ran amazing and placed fourth. Those are the kind of
performances you need to win these meets."
Jordan Clark was a point machine for the runner-up Chiefs. After
seeing limited action early in the season, the AAU-caliber sprinter won
the speed merchants' triple crown: the 100-meter dash (12.68), the 200
(25.40) and the 400 (1:00.25).
Canton's Bianca Kubicki was Clark's equal in the distance
events, winning the 1,600 in 5:34.19 before catching her breath and
winning the 3,200 about two hours later in 11:46.23.
Plymouth got off to a blazing start in the field events thanks
to Isis Haywood, who took gold in the discus (90 feet, 10 inches) and
the shot put (32-4.50). Plymouth's Reagan Engstrom won the pole vault
by a foot, posting a season-best height of 9 feet, 6 inches.
Salem's Kristina Klusek won the long jump with an effort of 15
feet, 9 inches before jumping over to the PCEP soccer pitch to compete
for the Rocks' unbeaten soccer team.
The most amazing effort of the day belonged to Wildcat freshman
Madi Lewis, who hit the ground after tipping a hurdle late in the
100-meter race, but righted herself quickly enough to place third, just
.26 behind Salem's Megan Paruta, who won in 18.76.
"I thought the girls ran tough today," said Plymouth coach Ricky
Styes, whose team is 2-0 in dual meets. "Things have been going really
well for us so far this year, but we had a few trials and tribulations
today that the girls will learn from.
"My hat is off to Dale and the Salem girls. They really came to
run today."
