East girls outkick Pioneer to capture city cross country title

  Sparked by the trio of Alison Morren, Sierra Bowden and Caroline Simko, East Middle School captured the girls' seventh/eighth grade Middle School Cross Country Championship held Tuesday at Cass Benton Park in Northville.

  Eighty runners representing the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools'  five middle schools covered the hilly 2,000-meter course in the finale of the middle school cross country season.

  East chalked up 44 points, 11 fewer than Pioneer. West was third with 70, Discovery was fourth (81) and Central was fifth with 97.

  Morren  and Bowden placed fourth and fifth in 13:44.17 and 13:55.02, respectively. Simko turned in a seventh-place effort in 14:15.69.

  Central's Hannah Stoliker was the overall winner, covering the challenging course in 13:34.61. Discovery's Mary Galm was second in 13:45.50.

  Each school's top-seven runners counted in the scoring.

  Pioneer's top runner was Elizabeth Yager, who placed third in 13:43.19.
