Harrison had a very
good season last
year. They moved up a division
in their
league and won the OAA Division II individual tournament by 30 points,
but
finished second in the league to North
Farmington based on
dual meet results. They
finished sixth at Observerland. Individually,
four
Hawks made it to regionals and Kevin Beazley placed seventh at the
state
tournament, giving Harrison its first
all-state wrestler in many years.
Head Coach Jim
Stuef and assistant Jon Herstein are going to have a challenge to have
a better
season this year. Harrison only lost
three wrestlers to graduation, Evan Hahn (130), Dan Leeb
(145, regional qualifier), and Brandon Martin (189).
However, it appears that several others have
not joined the team this year. These
include Fortune Martin (103), Ryan Ruspaj (140), and Kevin Beazley
(160), who
transferred to Detroit Catholic Central.
Not only do the Hawks lose their captain and best wrestler,
Kevin’s
father will now be coaching the DCC big men instead of Harrison’s kids.
Harrison will have a
core of
accomplished wrestlers to rely upon.
Regional qualifiers Andre Sanders and James Roberts return, as
do Evan
Doyle, Marcus Shepherd, and Sultan Hubbard.
Other returning varsity kids include Austin Jarvis, Kevin
Johnson, Kyle Lake, Gabe Unick,
and Lido
Zefi. Doyle, Lake, Roberts,
Sanders, and
Shepherd all participated in the Grappler Fall Classic, and Sanders did
very
well. Because of graduation, attrition,
and clumping of experienced wrestlers at ~135 pounds, the Hawks will
have to
bump up kids and put in untested wrestlers to fill their line-up.
Below is my best guess at the FHH varsity
line-up:
103 – Dylan Krauthofer (So)
112 – Evan Doyle (Sr)
119 – Andre Sanders (Sr) - captain
125 – Andrew Fialka (Fr)
130 – George Gardner III (So)
135 – James Roberts (Sr) - captain
140 – Kyle Lake (Jr)
145 – Marcus Shepherd (Jr) - captain
152 – Antonio Harris (Fr)
160 – Sultan Hubbard (Jr) - captain
171 – Mike Robinson (Fr)
189 – Lido Zefi (Sr)
215 – Austin Jarvis (Jr)
285 – Kevin Johnson (Jr)
This team may be similar to last year’s squad in that they will do well at individual tournaments, but not fare so well in duals against teams with solid wrestlers throughout the line-up. Look for Roberts and Sanders to make it to the state meet and perhaps place.
