Canton's underclassmen perform well at Harrison Hawks Relays

May 2, 2010, 11:50 p.m.

Friday's Harrison Hawks Relays gave the younger members of Canton's boys track-and-field a chance to shine, and several 9th- and 10th-grade Chiefs made the best of their opportunity.

Five relays and one individual earned medals at the event by placing in the top four. The Chiefs' highest-finishing unit was their sprint medley relay foursome of Shean Krolicki, Bryan Tolinski, Ryan Jimenez and Drake Hogan, who finished second in 4:10.5.

Canton's 3,200-meter relay team of Connor Mahan, Zach Cox, Kurt Kowalski and Neil Zech also had a stellar afternoon, taking third in 9:30.8.

Three Canton relay contingents placed fourth: the high jump duo of Zach Smilo and Matt McKoy, who combined to clear 9 feet, 10 inches; the pole vault tandem of Mitch Nickert and Ryan Kilgore, who soared a combined 17-6; and the distance medley foursome of Zech, Krolicki, Mahan and Cox, who finished in 12:32.6.

The lone individual placer was Scott Piwowar, who took fourth in the 100-meter dash in 12.7 seconds.
