Canton spikers shoot down John Glenn

Canton's volleyball team was clicking on all cylinders Thursday night against visiting Westland John Glenn.

Sparked by a strong serving night, the Chiefs swept the Rockets, 25-7, 26-24 and 25-15 to improve to 14-4 overall and 5-1 in the KLAA South Division.

Canton will host first-place Livonia Churchill on Oct. 15.

"We came out very strong with our serving in the first game," said coach Mary Kryska. "Our blocking is continuing to get better, which was our biggest weakness at the beginning of the season.

"I am very pleased with how the girls have been doing, but we still have some goals that we need to achieve when it comes to beating a few teams."

Sparking the first-game service onslaught was Anna Larner, who strung together 14 service points during one stretch.

Senior tri-captain Jordan Kielty had a huge game against the Rockets, recording 16 kills, 14 assists, 15 digs and three aces.

Also shining were Kristen Muir (nine kills, 17 digs and four aces), Lauren Macuga (16 digs), Traci Breitmeyer (17 assists) and Alaina Turner (six kills, two blocks and two aces).

"I am still making changes in my line-up, which keeps each girl working for her spot," said Kryska. "When they get too comfortable, that's when they don't work as hard."
