The $1
million question regarding elite volleyball player Kacy Moran's future
in the sport wasn't if she
would play Division 1 college volleyball; it was more like, where would she land.
Early this year, it appeared Canton High School's
all-time leader in set assists and aces was headed to Bowling Green
State University in Ohio.
But as happens in the world of big-time collegiate recruiting,
things changed.
"In March, Bowling Green called me and told me they didn't need
a setter
anymore," Moran said.
But like the sizzling serves that she has dug deftly off the
floor hundreds of times during her accolades-filled career, Moran rose
from the misfortune with a positive attitude and a better offer.
Not long after finding out the discouraging news from Bowling
Green, she was offered a scholarship at Western Kentucky University, a
highly regarded Division 1 program that is located in, of all places, Bowling Green, KY.
"I love everything about this place," said Moran. "From the
campus, to the atmosphere, to my teammates, there's nothing not to
like. Plus, the volleyball program is very good here, so it will be fun
to be a part of a winning team."
Given her freshman status in an established, often-ranked D1
program, it may take Moran some time to work her way into the regular
rotation, but she's cool with that.
"The coach hasn't said too much about my playing time," she said
in a phone interview two weeks ago. "There are two setters -- myself
and a sophomore -- so I'm just going to work as hard as I can when I
get my chance and hope for the best."
While her major is currently undecided, Moran said she's leaning
toward earning a degree in sports therapy.
Moran overcame a knee injury her senior season to earn Canton
High School's "2009 Female Athlete of the Year" award.
