Canton gymnasts turn in 1st-place performance at KLAA league meet

  Hail to the Chiefs' gymnastics team.

  On Saturday at the Kensington Lakes Activities Association's Conference Championships, Canton raised the bar, taking the meet with  a season-high point total of 146.05.

  Northville and Brighton tied for second with 140.45 points, just ahead of Livonia Blue (139.225) and Livonia Red (137.175).

  Freshman Alex Fideler was the Chiefs' most valuable gymnast on Saturday, taking first place in the all-around with a score of 37.425. Fideler won the uneven bars competition with a 9.425 while placing second in both the balance beam event (9.65) and the floor exercise (9.3).

  The ultra-talented ninth-grader rounded out her day with a fourth-place showing on the vault (9.05).

  Junior Robyn Piwowar also enjoyed a stellar day for the champions, racking up an all-around score of 37.2. Piwowar won the floor exercise with a 9.55, took second on the vault (9.3), third on the uneven bars (8.9) and fourth on the beam (9.45).

  Also shining in the all-around were Ayana Lewis (35.75) and Mallory Hudak (34.775).

  Lewis placed first on the bars (9.2) and fourth on the vault (9.05). Hudak was first in Division 2 on the floor (9.2) and third in D2 on the vault (9.075).

  Brittany Granowicz (33.05) and Marina Milad (32.65) also turned in solid efforts in the all-around.

  Also excelling for the Chiefs was Brooke Granowicz (9.05 on beam).

  The Chiefs entered the KLAA championships on a high note after registering 144.18 points in their victories over Northville (139.875) and Livonia Red (136.475) in a meet held Feb. 16.

  Piwowar led the way with a 37.325 all-around. Fideler also sparkled, turning in a 36.65 all-around, which until Saturday's meet was her personal-best score.

  Canton finished its regular season with a 10-2 record
