Plymouth Christian Academy's baseball team was a couple of
clutch hits away from pulling off a season-opening victory against host
Lenawee Christian Monday afternoon in the season opener for both teams.
However, the Eagles were clipped by Lenawee, 4-1, after leaving
men stranded in scoring position in four of the seven innings.
"We had runners on second and third with less than two outs in
the second and a runner at second in each of the third, fifth and
seventh innings, but we couldn't get the big hit," said PCA coach Joe
Bottorff.
The Eagles' lone run came in the first inning when Ethan Walker
drove home Daniel Slater.
PCA's only other hits were a single off the bat of Matt Dodson,
and a single and double from Matt Hagelin. The Eagles also drew four
walks.
Walker suffered the loss, yielding three earned runs while
striking out five in five innings. Walker was victimized by a bout of
wildness, walking eight batters.
The highlights of the game came from the two teams' center
fielders. PCA's Josh Johnston made four "great catches at key moments
of the game," according to Bottorff. On one play, Johnston fired a
throw to Dodson, who cut down a Lenawee Christian base-runner who was
attempting to stretch a double into a triple in the bottom of the first.
