Lions go 2-1 against Comets

Oct. 6, 2010, 4:15 p.m.

The Canton Lions Freshmen Football team came away with another victory last Sunday as they defeated the Westland Comets 19-6 for their fourth win of the season.

Justin Reynolds led the offensive attack with two touchdowns.  Darrell Harding, Jr. added a score as well.  Leading the blocking for the Lions was Harding, Jr., Bradley Tyszkiewicz, Chase Meredith, Ky le Hurley and Julian Gocaj.

The defense was stellar all day and held the Comets to a late touchdown.  Noah Brown had a fumble recovery to go along with several tackles.

Other defensive standouts were Spencer Brown, Wesley Askew, Bennett Austin, Connor Flanigan, Rubin Williams, and Eddie Cargor.

Another tough loss for the JV Lions.  On a windy Sunday the Canton Lions took on the Westland Comets.  The Lions defense was hitting hard all day.  Lead by solid interior play from Miles Davenport, Jason Arnold, Eric Daniels, Jackson Austin, Matt Wayne, Jakob Wickens, Issac Jackson, and Shaw Lyall the Comets found moving the ball difficult.

Radi Mahanyni, Kyrece Smith and Clayton Declue all played great defense.  Kevin Bindas added a drive stopping interception in the fourth quarter.

With the score 6-0 after three quarters the defense had done its job.  The offense started rolling in the fourth quarter with Freddie McGee, Alan Jones, and Jason Arnold running hard.

Evan Voyles connected with Jason Arnold on a screen to gain big yards. Korey Monacelli, Ryan Posby, Julius Crouch, and Austin Stoneburg all worked hard to open holes.  Both teams scored in fourth quarter to give the loss to the Lions: 13-7.

Canton travels to Belleville on Sunday October 10 at 2 pm to try and break this losing streak.

It was a home sweet homecoming for the Lions' varsity.  The Lions rebounded after their loss with an impressive showing against the Comets, winning 28-14.

The offense was unstoppable thanks in large part to the members of its Line: Ricky 'Big' Ski, Anthony Kenney, Jake Stropes, Evan Piontek, and Austin Fisher. The running backs weaved their way through the Comets D; Chuckie Turfe, Lavelle Steeples, and Ty Jasman had big days on the ground.

Devastating blocks by Sam Rizzo and Miles Newton made the running all the easier. QB Bobby 'Sunshine' Guarjardo had a good day connecting several times with Jake Mallad and Tyler Laurentius.

The defense was stout all day, with hits from Miles Newton that could be heard all the way in Westland. Stevie Cortelli shared in making some big hits along with Jason Polander, and Charles Wicker.

Tyler Laurentius added a highlight-film interception, when he soared through the air to pick off a Comet's pass, ending their drive. The special teams play of the day was turned in by Tristen Pelky, who after a five-yard penalty on the Lions, put his kickoff through the end-zone for a touch-back; a rare feat for little league football.

jasonJason Arnold had a productive day for the Lions.
