Marlins turn the tide, capture 10U Competitive League championship

July 1, 2010, 11:15 p.m.

The GCYBSA's 10U Competitive League Marlins battled through the losers' bracket to emerge as playoff champions.

After dropping the first playoff game in the double-elimination format to the Phillies, the Marlins knocked out the Yankees and Tigers to set up a rematch against the Phillies Tuesday night.

The Marlins outslugged the Phillies, 15-5, in the first game to force a second and deciding game two.

In the nightcap, the Marlins' bats remained hot on the way to a emphatic 16-0 victory.

All of the Marlins contributed offensively in the two-game set, led by Gabe Segovia and Jacob Seipenko, who combined to go 6-for-7 on the night. Five additional Marlin hitters had on-base percentages of .500 or better, including Matt Malcom and Kyle Cotter, who reached base three times.

Ryan Fulayter, Noah DeGuzman and Chase Meredith each had extra-base hits.

Andrew Putlock, Ethan Pattison and Peter Merckx all scored in the fourth inning of the second game to secure the win.

Backed by solid defense, Mitch Harber, Segovia, Seipenko and Cotter pitched well throughout the double-header.

Jacob Paton, on the 15-day disabled list with an injured wrist, cheered the team from the bench.
