Bright spots emerge in Salem's
98-39 setback to powerful Novi

April 22, 2010, 10 p.m.

You can't always judge a track-and-field team's performance based solely on the final score.

Salem dropped a 98-39 decision to Novi Tuesday afternoon, but there were some extenuating circumstances involved -- as well as some sterling performances.

"It was tough putting together a truly competitive roster for this meet knowing the city meet is two days away," said Salem coach Dale Maskill, referring to Thursday's annual showdown between all three PCEP teams at the PCEP junior varsity stadium. "We rested some runners and cut back on some races to insure our best performances for Thursday."

Among the standouts on Tuesday were distance runners Victoria (Tori) Tripp and Kara Booms.

"This was the first time we really got to see Tori race this season," said Maskill. "It's fun to watch because Tori just doesn't accept losing in any distance.

"Kara ran a personal best in the 1,600 and placed second in the 800. We put her in the 800 to give her a break from the 3,200. Coach Dave DeSilvio, our distance coach, saw it coming because she has been running really well in the workouts this season. I'm really glad to see her running so well; she works so hard in practice."

A pair of Salem relay teams were victorious: the 1,600 foursome of Ade Jepperson, Jordyn Moore, Nancy Krutty and Adrianna Beltran; and the 800 unit of Erica Hatcher, Jepperson, Megan Paruta and Beltran.
