Another
incredibly exciting final was the 130-pound showdown between John
Glenn's Anthony Pavlich and Belleville's Tyler Schneider. Pavlich
scored a point on an early escape then hung on to fight off an intense
Schneider comeback bid late in the third period.
The 140-pound final between Canton's Donnie Watkins and CC's
Justin Melick was edge-of-your-seat exciting as well. Watkins led 3-2
thanks to an escape with 50 seconds left, however, Melick executed a
two-point reverse with just 14 seconds remaining to pull off the
hard-earned win.
The Chiefs won back-to-back titles at 171 and 189 thanks
technical masterpieces by Keith Zech and Anthony Abro.
Zech nipped the lone Churchill finalist, Curtis Castleberry,
4-3, when he executed an escape with 29 seconds left and the score
deadlocked at 3-3. Castelberry battled relentlessly to regain at least
a draw, but couldn't find a weakness in Zech.
Abro's victory at 189 was more comfortable, so to speak, as the
junior outpointed CC's Miles Trealout, 12-5 after building an 8-2
second-period lead.
"Anthony is getting better and better every day," said Mancuso.
"Overall, I thought things went the way I thought they would. We got
six in the finals and Waleed (Faraj) just missed. We had some tough
matches in the finals against some tough teams. We lost a couple and
won a few.
"Winekoff has been pushing hard all year. He was a in a good
match
today. It will help him at the end.
"And I was really impressed with Keshav Patel (Canton's
103-pound finalist). He lost a major decision to that kid a couple
weeks ago and today he only lost 4-0. Pretty good for a kid who's only
wrestled for two years."
CC's champions were TJ Fagan (103), Ken Bade (112), Alec
Mooradian (125), Justin Melick (140), Doug Eldridge (145) and Mike
Kinville (215).
Livonia Franklin crowned a pair of champs: Jordan McGuire (135)
and Matt Roos (152).
A trio of Rockets captured their respective weight classes:
119-pound Josh Austin, who major decisioned Todd Melick in an
action-packed contest; Pavlich at 130; and heavyweight Dustin Jajowiak,
who pinned Belleville's Dustin Staton in 3:28.
Plymouth coach Quinn Guernsey was somewhat contest with his
team's performance.
"We had some highs and some lows," the second-year coach said.
"Some kids looked really good. (Said) Youssef looked strong at 119 and
Wally (Eppler) had a heckuva quarterfinal match against a CC kid. It
was a nice win for him.
"As far as the rest of the team, some guys' wins were nice;
other guys could have won a few more points. As a team, overall I guess
I was happy on the day. We were ninth today and 12th last year, so
we're making some improvement."
