The Plymouth-Canton-Salem
Penguins should be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming Michigan
Metro Girls High School Hockey League playoffs based on their strong
play down the stretch.
On Tuesday, the Penguins improved to 8-9 overall -- good enough
for second place in the MMGHSHL's Division 2 -- with a solid 3-2
overtime victory over Farmington Hills Mercy.
Kara Bongiovanni was the hero against the Marlins, netting an
unassisted game-winner with 1:46 left in the extra session.
Rhianna Fleischer opened the scoring for the winners with an
unassisted second-period goal. The Penguins' eventual game-tying
goal was tallied by Shauna Siebert off an assist from Mallory Rojo.
With her team trailing 2-1, Mercy's Madeline McClain forced the
overtime with a goal with just 32 seconds left in regulation.
On Feb. 13, the Penguins suffered a gut-wrenching 2-1 setback to
Livonia Ladywood. The winning goal was scored by Ladywood's Hannah
Periera with 8:48 to play off an assist from Rana Freji.
PCS's lone net-finder was produced by Siebert, who knocked in a
pass from Rojo.
On Feb. 9, the Penguins dropped a 7-0 decision to league power
Cranbrook Kingswood, who were bolstered by the two-goal game of Caley
Chelios. The Cranes netted four first-period goals and three in the
third.
On Feb. 8, the Penguins white-washed Detroit Country Day, 4-0.
Senior defenseman Jordyn Moore scored twice while Marissa Sullivan and
Sarah Coleman added single goals.
Four days earlier, the Penguins earned one of their most
exciting victories of the season when they outlasted Walled Lake, 6-5.
Siebert broke a 5-all deadlock with 2:48 left with an unassisted
lamp-lighter. The goal capped a hat trick for the fast-skating senior.
Jordyn Moore scored two goals, both of which were assisted by
Kara Bongiovanni, and Sullivan found the net after securing a pass from
Bongiovanni.
Emma Crone tallied two goals for Walled Lake.
