In addition to being shot-makers, members of Plymouth's girls
golf team are history-makers.
For the first time in the school's nine-year history, the
Wildcats are headed to the Division 1 state meet as a team thanks to
Thursday's third-place effort at the Region 2 tournament held at Polo
Fields at Washtenaw.
On the heels of an unbeaten regular season, the 'Cats carded a
fine score of 385 to finish behind only Saline (343) and Bedford (359).
The top three teams in each region qualify for the state meet,
which will be held Oct. 15 and 16 at Eagle Crest in Ypsilanti.
Plymouth's historic accomplishment was fueled by a pair of
sophomores. Sarah Thompson fired a sizzling 83, missing medalist honors
by just one shot. Kelsey Murphy registered a solid 84 to provide the
'Cats with a stellar 1-2 combination.
Also scoring for the state-qualifiers were Danielle Allen, whose
107 was good enough for 24th place overall; and Mary Kirsch, whose 111
placed her 29th. Carly Curvin also played well, carding a 116.
Last year Murphy qualified for the state meet as an individual.
Canton placed seventh at the regional thanks to fine
performances from Paige Osler (102), Kelsey McDougall (108), Mary
Elizabeth Winther (114) and Chloe Luyet (117).
Kaylie Lobb fired a 121 for the Chiefs.
Salem did not figure into the scoring as only two golfers
played. Katie Veno shot a 129 while Christine Li recorded a 136.
