  The dominant team dominated.

The up-and-coming team flashed traces of their potential brilliance to come.

And the short-handed team struggled, looking ahead to better, healthier days.

In a unique dual meet held Wednesday night in the Plymouth High School gymnasium, grappling fans had an opportunity to check out all three local high school squads, who were also joined by KLAA opponent Novi.

As expected, state-ranked Canton was the lone 2-0 team, humbling shorted-handed Salem 73-3 before pummeling Novi, 57-9.

On-the-rise Plymouth dropped a 41-21 decision to Novi before bouncing back to sink the Rocks, 51-22.

And Salem dropped to 6-5 while wrestling with five voided weight classes due to injury illness and other issues.

"Not to complain, but we had a lot of kids out," said Salem coach Greg Woochuk. "The kids that we did have came in with higher expectations and they definitely didn't meet or exceed those expectations.

"The freshmen we have wrestling varsity tonight will need to step it up even further."

One of the highlights of the night for Salem was heavyweight Blake Abbey's 3-2 overtime victory over Plymouth's Wally Eppler in a classic big man's showdown in which points were at a premium.

"Blake wrestled a good match," said Woochuk. "He reminded me of how he wrestled last year. He was more aggressive tonight and he went after it like he did last year."

One of the most exciting matches in the Salem-Canton encounter was Keith Zech's 2-0 triumph over Jimmy Gross. Both wrestlers are ranked highly in area polls and have lofty post-season expectations.

The Chiefs rolled early, receiving a void at 103 before Keshaw Patel upended Danny Kemp, 21-5. Alex Eimers followed with a pin of Ryan Moore at 119 to keep the momentum rolling.

Plymouth captured the first four matches against Novi, as 103-pounder Shadi Jammoul edged Andrew Park, 8-7; Alec Breckenridge pinned his opponent at 112; Said Yousef received a void at 119 and Chase Kallil outpointed Matt Aoun, 6-4, at 125.

However, Novi rallied with seven straight wins to take control of the match.

"I thought we lost a lot of winnable matches," said Plymouth coach Quinn Guernsey. "The final score probably doesn't show the potential for how close this could have been.

"Every weight we lost, their guy was just a little better than our guys, many of whom I thought would get wins.

"Wally continues to wrestle well also with Alec and Chase."
