Seventy-four area wrestlers advanced out of six different district tournaments on Saturday. This is the highest number of regional qualifiers since the Observerland tournament was created 19 years ago. Sixteen of the area’s 17 teams advanced at least one wrestler, and Catholic Central advanced all 14. Below is how each team fared at their district tournament.
Belleville (6): Tyler Schneider (130) and Forrest Sampson (215) placed second. Brendan Papin (119), Andrew Majewski (145), and Mark Tooley placed third. Dustin Staton (285) took fourth.
Canton (9): Donnie Watkins (140), Brent Winekoff (152), Keith Zech (160), and Anthony Abro (189) were district champions. Waleed Faraj (125) placed second and Alex Eimers (119) and Mitch Wolski (130) came in third. Richard DeMarois (103) and Ben Poirer (215) took fourth.
Catholic Central (14): District champions were Ken Bade (103), Todd Melick (112), Alec Mooradian (119), Charlie Joseph (125), Justin Melick (135), Doug Eldridge (145), and Mike Kinville (215). Runners-up were T. J. Fagan (103), Matt Thompson (119), Nick Mason (130), Andrew Erickson (160), Miles Trealout (189), and Andrew Johnson (215). Gerid Gee (152) placed fourth.
Clarenceville (2): Anthony Giordano (285) took second and Mike Weiss (103) took third.
Farmington (3): Dylan Wells (285), Nick Tomski (145), and Anthony Porto (119) placed first, third, and fourth, respectively.
Farmington Hills Harrison (4): James Roberts (135) and Kevin Beazley (160) placed second. Andre Sanders (119) took third and Dan Leeb (145) was fourth.
Garden City (2): Kevin Allard (140) took third and Devin Ashley (135) placed fourth.
John Glenn (9): District champions were Josh Austin (119), Anthony Pavlich (130), Travis Mann (140) and Mike Johnson (145). Steve Wakeford (112) was runner-up. Coming in third were Kyle Gillies (103), Mark Thompson (135), and Dustin Gajowiak (285). Kameron Jones (171) took fourth.
Livonia Churchill (4): Jonny Bannoura (135) and Curtis Castleberry (171) came in second. John Shekell (285) and Jacob Meadows (112) placed third and fourth, respectively.
Livonia Franklin (7): Jordan McGuire (130) was champion, and Steve Tuyo (119) was runner-up. Brothers Dan Martinez (103) and Gabe Martinez (112) placed third, as did Matt Roos (152). Sophomores Ryan Derry (130) and Avery Opperman (140) took fourth.
Livonia Stevenson (5): Charlie Kokenakes (140) was second and Jake Burns (171) took third. Placing fourth were Dan McCarthy (171), Andrew Schramm (189), and Nathan Keedle (285).
Lutheran Westland (3): Laith Francis (125) and Justin Palka (130) placed second, and Sean Rowe (135) came in third.
North Farmington (2): Matt Jaisle (119) was district champion and Garrett Fisk (130) placed fourth.
Plymouth (1): Wally Eppler (285) came in second.
Salem (2): Devin Stratton (125) and James Middleditch (135) each took third.
Wayne Memorial (1): Josh Mills (160) finished fourth.
