Some of the top boys high school swimming and diving teams in the state -- from A(nn Arbor Pioneer) to Z(eeland) -- converged at the Salem High School pool Saturday for a mini state meet.

The Pioneers successfully defended their Rock Kilgore Invitational title, outpointing runner-up Northville, 319-249. Zeeland touched third with 208, 25 points ahead of fourth-place Livonia Stevenson.

Salem (130) and Canton (94) placed fifth and sixth in the talent-rich competition.

The invitational has been held every year since 1999 in memory of former Salem swimmer Michael Kilgore, who passed away March 4, 1998, after suffering a heart attack at the age of 16.

(A story on how Michael Kilgore's spirit still inspires local swimmers will appear on PlymouthCantonSports.com beginning Monday.)

While the two local contingents didn't finish near the top of the final standings, several individuals excelled, particularly Salem's Adam Seroka and Canton's Victor Zhang.

Seroka, a junior, took gold in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.09) and the 500 free (4:50.13).

Zhang, a sophomore, won the 200 individual medley in 1:59.54 and touched second behind only Seroka in the 500 free (4:51.05).

Matt Collingwood also earned a pair of top-six finishes, placing fourth in both the 50 free (22.72) and the 100 free (50.31).
