0-2 start distant memory for Salem

Dec. 17, 2009, 12:30 p.m.

Salem's girls basketball team is on the right track following its third straight victory after two season-opening losses, right Fred Thomann?

"Well, I don't know if we're on the right track, but we're definitely playing better.

Buoyed by a solid first and third quarters when they outscored the visiting Wildcats by a toal of 34-12, Salem coasted to a 49-32 victory to improve to 3-2. Plymouth, on the other hand, slipped to 1-3.

"I though we moved the ball really well tonight," said Thomann. "We shared the ball and our defense was solid. I wasn't please with our second quarter (when they scored just four points) because we weren't recognizing things we should have been recognizing."

Sara Stone led Salem with 15 points and 11 boards. Stone fellow senior captains also sparkled as Brett deBear added 13 points and three assists wihle Rachael Norman scored 13 points and dished out five assists.

Plymouth senior Stacey Klonowski scored 60 percent of her team's points, pumping in 21 to go with her seven boards.

Thomann wouldn't come out and admit that his team was making marked progress since its opening two losses.

"Now, if we had played Bright four games in a row and come out with the results we have, then I'd say we're making a lot of progress," he said. "But there are a number of things you have to look at. We'll see where this takes us."
