Her initials are R&R, but there is little time for rest and
relaxation these days for Canton two-sport standout Rachel Rohrbach.
And that's just the way she likes it.
A high-energy athlete who is a role model for younger students
who are looking for the proper ways to tackle the sometimes demanding
homework/practice regimen that being a student-athlete can present,
Rohrbach was named a captain of the 2010 Canton cross country team.
The owner of a 3.9 grade-point average, She was a vital member
of the Chiefs' soccer team that was state-ranked in the spring and is
one of the top runners on this fall's cross country squad that is
looking to make a run at a title in the Kensington Lakes Activities
Association South Division.
Rohrbach took a few moments out of her busy schedule recently to
speak with PlymouthCantonSports.com's Ed Wright.
ED WRIGHT: What do you like
best about being a captain?
RACHEL
ROHRBACH: I love being there to help out the other girls. I
like being in a position to organize everything and to encourage the
freshmen.
EW: Was there a captain that
influenced you the most when you were a freshmen?
RR:
We've had a lot of great captains, but when I was younger, Sarah Thomas
was the best. She was so nice and supportive. She'd come over to me and
say, 'Rachel, keep working hard because you are an awesome runner.'
I'll never forget that. That's the kind of captain I want to be.
EW: How and when did you get
into long-distance running?
RR: I
ran
in middle school, but only track. I started running cross country
my freshman year at Canton and have loved it ever since. I'll run the
rest of my life. Once you start, you can't stop. I run every day except
on Sundays now. Running is a part of me now.
EW: What do you like about
running?
RR:
After a race or a long training run, there's a sense of accomplishment.
I'll think to myself, 'Oh my gosh, I can't believe I just did that.' It
feels so good.
EW: What do you like about this
year's team?
RR:
We all mesh very well. I think we're going to be very successful. This
team is like a big family. Every year I've looked forward to coming
back to run cross country. I'm very sad that this is going to be the
last year.
EW: What is your best time so
far?
RR:
I ran a 19:27 my freshman year. Last year, it was 20-something.
EW: What's your No. 1 goal this
year?
RR: To
break
20 again.
EW: Who's had the most influence
on your running career?
RR: My
teammates
and my coaches make me so much better.
EW: What colleges are you
looking at?
RR: I
want
to go into food science. Michigan State and Ohio State both have
good programs.
EW: What career do you have your
sights set on?
RR: I
like
to be a nutritionist. It goes hand-in-hand with running and health.
