Building on its hard-earned momentum has been an issue this season for Salem's football team.

On Friday night, for the second time in the past four weeks, the Rocks followed up a spirited win with a disappointing loss, 42-10, to the Patriots.

The decision leaves Salem with a 2-6 mark heading into Friday night's finale against Canton.

"We were flat, emotion-less," lamented Salem head coach Kurt Britnell. "Franklin has a good football team, but we did ourselves in a lot tonight."

Salem trailed 21-7 at the half. The Rocks' TD came on a 5-yard pass from Jake Peterson to Ethan Walsh.

Salem momentarily seized the momentum early in the second half when Walsh drilled a 33-yard field goal to cut his team's deficit to 21-10. The margin could have been closer, however, Marcus Houston's long touchdown run prior to the field goal was called back by a blocking-in-the-back penalty.

Franklin scored on its next possession to extend its cushion to 28-10 and the Patriots never looked back.

Houston had a solid night, gaining 72 yards on 17 carries. Peterson completed 8-of-20 passes for 101 yards and the TD to Walsh.

Defensively, Walsh racked up 12 tackles while Austin Root was credited with eight stops. Rebhi Elder picked off a Franklin pass for the Rocks.
