A few moments
after Salem man-handled South Lyon, 9-1, earlier this month in a KLAA
Central Division boys soccer match, Rocks coach Ed McCarthy offered the
following warning: "South Lyon is a lot better team than that."
McCarthy's statement gained credibility on Thursday -- too much
credibility as far as the Rocks were concerned -- as the Lions roared
to a 3-2 victory over Salem in a match played in South Lyon.
The loss dropped Salem to 9-3-2 and 5-1 in the division. The
Rocks are still in first place, one-half game ahead of runner-up
Northville.
"This was a big setback for us," said McCarthy. "This was a very
motivated South Lyon team we played tonight. They definitely earned the
win.
"We're going to have to play a lot better than we did tonight if
we want to go on and win the division and eventually the conference."
Salem struck first mid-way through the first half when Evan
Antich, who's been an offensive force the past few weeks, scored off an
assist from Lachlan Savage.
The Lions knotted the game at 1-all toward the end of the first
half, however, Salem re-gained its advantage 10 minutes into the second
half when Alex Tramel scored from dddddddddddd to put the Rocks up,
2-1.
Undaunted, South Lyon tallied the game-tying goal 10 minutes later and the game-winner with just 20 seconds left on the clock.
